At Kaeb Sanitary our goal is to make sure our customers are informed on the best possible procedures & products for combatting COVID-19.

Here is some basic information regarding the SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19.

  1. The SARS-CoV-2 virus can potentially live on hard surfaces for several days.  One study shows that it can survive up to 3 days on stainless steel or plastic surfaces.

New England Journal of Medicine, https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMc2004973

  2. The virus is an enveloped virus (vs non-enveloped) meaning it is easier to kill than many viruses which is very good news.  The EPA has published a list of disinfectants effective against the SARS-CoV-2 virus.  This list is available at: https://www.epa.gov/pesticide-registration/list-n-disinfectants-use-against-sars-cov-2     For a list of disinfectants that Kaeb Sanitary has in stock effective against the virus click here: https://www.kaebsanitarystore.com/catalogproduct.aspx?ci=COVDIS
  3. For disinfectants to be fully effective against the SARS-CoV-2 virus (or any virus listed on the label) the proper dwell time must be achieved.  Most disinfectants have a 10 minute dwell time meaning the surface must remain wet for 10 minutes.

With many basic disinfecting supplies not currently available we want to answer this question: How can we protect our customers, our employees, and our families with the limited products we have available?  Here are some of our recommendations:

  1. Clean hands regularly with soap & water.  The CDC recommends washing hand for 20 seconds.  Don’t freak out if hand sanitizer is not available – although hand sanitizer is convenient, washing hands is still the best. https://www.cdc.gov/handwashing/pdf/hand-sanitizer-factsheet.pdf
  2. Aerosol Disinfectants and Spray Bottles are in short supply right now.  Consider using microfiber and charging buckets.  The use of microfiber helps with surfaces staying wet for the proper dwell time and cleans better than traditional towels.Make sure not to dip microfiber back in the bucket to prevent cross-contamination.  Click on this list for product ideas: https://www.kaebsanitarystore.com/catalogproduct.aspx?ci=COVMIC
  3. Clean touch points first.  With limited supply, ask the question where is disinfecting the most important?  Floors where people walk or door handles or even walls where people touch?  This doesn’t mean don’t clean floors but maybe it’s appropriate to clean with a neutral cleaner vs. a neutral disinfectant cleaner.  For those using auto-scrubbers remember disinfectant needs up to a 10 minute dwell time to be effective – How long does an auto-scrubbed floor stay wet?

Hopefully some of these suggestions help in our collective fight against COVID-19 (and other viruses).  If you have any further questions please call our office at (309) 829-3011 or email Clint at clint@kaebsanitary.com
